LJS Signs (2005-2006)
What it Was
The custom enterprise application for the real estate sign installation company LJS & associates consisted of an internal Java application and a public-facing jsp website used by clients and contract workers. The system was the backbone of the business and was used for inventory management, customer relationship management, accounts receivable, accounts payable, order tracking, and more.
What I Did
I created a web-to-print system and interface for ordering and manufacturing custom real estate "rider" signs.
I also made various enhancements to the backend system to allow for handling of new inventory items and new account types. I spent the majority of my time learning how to create mission-critical systems used for accounting and inventory tracking purposes.
Why You Should Care
The web-to-print system allowed clients to create signs with custom text and photos. It would generate a large scale, vector graphic based upon the input and send the data directly to a fabricator for printing. I learned a lot about typography and how to generate graphics programatically.
It was also a very cool way of using the "virtual world" to create physical objects in the real world.
